Blacklisting in China after sensitive topics, sensitive tourists

The Chinese government has created this year a blacklist to penalize Chinese tourists for their bad behavior when they travel. This comes after a series of event that put Chinese tourist under the spotlight in a bad way, something the government would have preferred to avoid these days;

Zhang Yan and Wang Sheng were the first to appear on the list and they will be until March 2017. The third person who forced open an emergency door on a domestic flight and was detained for 15 days, will be blacklisted for two years.

The National Tourism Office in China added three more Chinese on the black list, due to bad behavior during their trip. In these three persons is included a young woman who threw a cup of hot water with noodles to a flight attendant of AirAsia and her boyfriend who is accused of threatening to blow up the plane from Bangkok to Nanjing.

The reaction on social media

Two weeks ago, Internet users have criticized men who were photographed caressing the breasts of a naked statue of Yang Guifei, the wife of Emperor Xuanzong of the Tang Dynasty, who is also one the four beauties of ancient China.

Users of social medias expect that man will receive a sentence similar to a tourist who had been photographed sitting on the head of a bronze statue of the Red Army Memorial Park Shengli Shan, also in Shaanxi Province.

This man became one of the first to be added to the blacklist of tourists who behave badly, established to punish Chinese citizens who have a “uncivilized” behavior. He was banned from visiting tourist parks of China for a period of 10 years.

The Chinese government try time and time again to improve his image…

Let’s just say that China has never been the country with the best reputation : freedom of speech, where? Pollution and overcrowding, wide gap between the super poor and the super rich and so on…

Now, its the turn of Chinese tourists to become a “PR problem” : They behave badly resulting tarnishing the image of a country trying hard to look more amicable.

How do they counter that?

From a communication point of view they have made several attempt at showing their concern about this with

  • Huge coverage of Xi Jin Ping statement about Chinese tourist who must stop “eating their noodle and start eating local food”
  • Edition of a read manual…about how to behave properly overseas.

The latest is blacklisting Chinese tourist from going out of the country. Still,

Two things that people around the world keep considering : Chinese are the biggest spenders when they go travel ($3000 per travel in average, easy as pie when you know that they are above average earners anyway)

Bad press is hard to remove no matter the scale of the problem. But we can do that.
