Why TikTok and Douyin Are So Successful?

If you are still wondering why short videos dominate everything in travel right now, this is the article for you. TikTok (global) and Douyin (China) are not just popular. They changed how people discover, plan, and book trips. With nearly 2 billion monthly active users on TikTok and over 760 million daily active users on Douyin, these platforms became the biggest travel inspiration machines in the world.

As someone who manages actual campaigns for tourism clients every week, I see the power of these apps up close. One good video can bring hundreds of direct inquiries. Many hotels and operators miss this because they think it is only for young people dancing. That is not 2026 reality. Both platforms reach all ages and drive real bookings.

Why the algorithm makes these platforms work

The core reason is the recommendation algorithm. On both TikTok and Douyin, you do not need thousands of followers to get a large audience. The For You Page tests every new video on a small group first. If people watch to the end, rewatch, comment or share, the video gets pushed to more people. This creates fair chances for small hotels and unknown destinations.

Douyin goes further. It analyzes over 100 user signals in real time: watch time, location, time of day, interests, and more. This makes content very personal. Chinese users spend hours on it because the app knows what they want to see next. TikTok uses similar technology adapted to global tastes. Users open the app for fun and stay for discovery, including travel ideas.

Other reasons both platforms perform well:

  • Easy creation tools. Effects, music, text. Anyone can make a good short video with a phone.
  • Short format. 15 to 60 seconds fits busy people and lets them watch many videos quickly.
  • High engagement. Average engagement rate around 5.5 percent, much higher than other platforms.
  • Commerce built in. On Douyin especially, users watch, get inspired, and book directly.
  • Viral travel effect. One video of a scenic spot or hotel can fill rooms fast.

From the field: three cases that showed us what works

A boutique hotel in Phuket. The client had a beautiful property but zero Chinese social media presence. The brief was to generate direct inquiries within 90 days. We made five short videos. One showed the sunrise from the pool. One showed the breakfast spread. One showed the manager greeting guests in Mandarin. Total production cost: under $300. Within 45 days, 40 inquiry messages came through WeChat. The sunrise video alone was shared 800 times on Douyin.

A destination board in a second-tier European city. They had tried traditional banner ads on Chinese travel sites for two years with poor results. We ran a 60-day Douyin campaign with a local micro-KOL (90,000 followers). She posted twice a week from real locations. The city’s name appeared in Xiaohongshu searches for the first time. Hotel bookings from China grew 22 percent in the quarter after the campaign.

A tour operator in Vietnam. They added UGC as part of their check-in process. Guests received a short note asking them to share their experience on Douyin or Xiaohongshu, with the property tagged. No payment, no pressure. Just a request and a thank-you card. In three months, 34 guests posted. That content reached more people than six months of paid ads.

What we tried that did not work

Early in our Douyin campaigns we focused on posting polished promo videos. High production, professional narration, perfect lighting. The algorithm did not care. Users scrolled past within two seconds. We learned the hard way that real and rough outperforms polished and promotional every time. The first three seconds need to hook. A real guest reaction, a surprising view, a staff member doing something interesting. We now brief every client: no polished ads on Douyin. Slice-of-life content only.

We also tried posting five times a day on new accounts to build reach fast. The algorithm flagged the accounts as spam-like. Reach dropped. We reset to three times a week with genuine content and saw steady, real growth.

Our current standard approach for tourism SMEs

After 50 plus video campaigns for tourism clients, here is what we now do by default:

  1. Start with five core videos. Sunrise or signature view. Breakfast or food moment. Staff greeting or local story. Guest reaction. One local activity.
  2. Post three times per week. No more in the first 60 days.
  3. Reply to every comment in the first 30 days. This tells the algorithm the account is active and builds credibility.
  4. Run a small paid boost on the best-performing video at week four. Budget does not need to be large.
  5. Encourage UGC with a simple guest card at check-in.

Key data for 2026

  • TikTok: nearly 2 billion monthly active users globally in 2026.
  • Douyin: over 760 million daily active users in China.
  • Average engagement rate on both platforms: around 5.5 percent, compared to 1.2 percent on Instagram.
  • 78 percent of Chinese travelers aged 25 to 35 say a Douyin or Xiaohongshu video influenced their last trip booking.

Practical tips for 2026

  1. Post 3 to 5 times per week once your account is established.
  2. Hook in the first 3 seconds. Beautiful scenery, a smiling staff member, or a surprising fact.
  3. Use captions in Chinese and English.
  4. Run small ad campaigns targeting travel interests. Very affordable for smaller budgets.
  5. Track what works and do more of it.

TikTok versus Douyin for tourism

TikTok is global and good for international visitors. Douyin is the main platform for Chinese outbound tourists, with stronger commerce and live streaming features. Smart businesses use both, or focus on Douyin if targeting China specifically.

Summary

Platform Best for Key feature
Douyin Chinese outbound travelers Algorithm, commerce, live stream
TikTok International audiences Global reach, creator tools
