WeChat Official Account vs WeChat Channels: Which One to Open First

I onboard a lot of tourism clients who ask the same question in the first meeting: “Do we need a WeChat Official Account or WeChat Channels?” Usually they say it like one replaces the other. It doesn’t. They serve different purposes and choosing the wrong starting point costs 3 to 4 months of setup time. According to Tencent’s 2025 data, WeChat has over 1.3 billion monthly active users, but only a fraction of those engage with official accounts regularly.

What each product actually does

A WeChat Official Account is a content channel. Think newsletter meets CRM. You publish articles, users subscribe, they read in their feed. There are two types: Subscription Accounts and Service Accounts. Subscription Accounts let you post once a day, push into a folded “subscriptions” drawer, and get low open rates unless your content is very strong. Service Accounts push four times a month and land directly in the main chat list, same place as personal contacts. For most tourism businesses, a Service Account is the right choice because the message reach is significantly better.

WeChat marketing for tourism requires understanding this distinction early. Many clients come to us after spending two months verifying a Subscription Account only to realize they needed Service Account features like custom menus, booking integrations, and payment links.

WeChat Channels launched in 2020. It is the short-video and live-stream tab inside WeChat. Think of it as WeChat’s answer to Douyin. As of 2025, it has 800 million plus users and is less saturated than Douyin, which makes it easier for foreign brands to get organic reach. The content is algorithm-distributed, meaning you don’t need an existing follower base to get views.

The verification gap

This is where most projects stall. Foreign businesses verifying a WeChat Official Account typically wait 6 to 12 weeks. You need a business license in China or a Chinese partner entity to complete the process. The annual verification fee is 300 RMB. WeChat Channels, by contrast, can be opened by any individual or brand with a personal WeChat account. The barrier is much lower and setup can happen in days, not months.

If your timeline is tight, starting with Channels buys you time to build content and audience while the Official Account verification moves through the system. But they are not interchangeable. Channels does not give you the CRM functions, menu customization, or direct messaging tools that an Official Account provides.

From the field: a Swiss mountain resort

A client runs a boutique spa resort in the Swiss Alps. They came to us with a 60-day deadline before the Chinese New Year campaign. Their original plan: open an Official Account, grow followers, push a booking deal. The timeline was impossible once we mapped out verification.

We split the strategy. Channels first: we posted three short videos per week showing snow conditions, the thermal pool, and check-in moments. Content was simple, authentic, no heavy production. Within 5 weeks the account had 12,000 followers and one video reached 800,000 views organically. The Official Account ran in parallel through verification. By the time it launched, we had a warm audience to migrate. Followers clicked through to the service menu and used the integrated booking link. The CNY campaign ran 3 weeks later than planned but still drove 40-plus direct inquiries.

What we got wrong at first

Early in my time at the agency, we always pushed Official Account first. We thought it was the professional move, the one that signaled long-term commitment to the Chinese market. We lost two or three clients because they ran out of budget during verification and never launched at all. The 10-week wait is real and the client needs deliverables in that window. Now we always open Channels first as a live asset. It shows progress, generates content, and keeps the client engaged during a slow administrative process.

What we recommend now

Start Channels immediately. Post 3 times per week minimum. Focus on destination atmosphere, behind-the-scenes, local experiences. Do not pitch prices in the first month. Build the trust layer first.

Submit Official Account verification in parallel. Choose Service Account unless you have a content team that can produce daily articles. Build your custom menu around booking, FAQ, and contact. Connect to your WeChat Pay or reservation system before you launch publicly.

Use Channels content to feed the Official Account. A video that performed well becomes an article with more context. The two formats support each other. See how our team structures this inside our full services offer.
