How to Use the Chinese Holiday Calendar for Tourism Marketing
Every year, a client asks us why their October campaign underperformed. The answer is almost always the same: they planned for October 1st, forgetting that Chinese travelers book Golden Week in July. The holiday calendar isn’t just a scheduling tool. It’s the backbone of every campaign we build.
If you’re not planning your Chinese marketing around the Chinese calendar, you’re operating 3 months behind your competitors who are.
The Chinese holiday calendar every tourism marketer needs to know
There are six dates that drive the majority of Chinese outbound travel. Miss them in your content planning and you miss the bookings.

Chinese New Year (CNY), January or February. The biggest travel period of the year. Dates shift annually based on the lunar calendar. In 2027, CNY falls on January 29. Families travel together. Luxury properties, cultural experiences, and “face” destinations (Paris, Swiss Alps, Dubai) perform well. Content campaign should start 10 to 12 weeks before the date. Booking window closes fast in December.
Qingming Festival, early April. A 3-day holiday. Domestic travel dominates but short-haul outbound (Japan, Southeast Asia, Hong Kong) picks up. Not a major driver for European destinations, but worth noting for Southeast Asian properties.
Labour Day Golden Week, May 1 to 5. A 5-day holiday that has been growing as an outbound travel period. European destinations, Japan, Southeast Asia. Content window: March through April. Shorter booking lead time than CNY.
Dragon Boat Festival, June. A 3-day holiday, mostly domestic. Low impact on outbound for most of our clients. We don’t build major campaigns around it unless the client has a specific short-haul audience.
National Day Golden Week, October 1 to 7. The second biggest outbound travel period of the year. Long-haul destinations perform very well: Europe, Africa, the Americas. Content campaign should start in July. Booking window is typically August-September for long-haul.
Christmas and New Year, late December. Growing in popularity for outbound travel. Luxury ski resorts, European Christmas markets, and warm-weather escapes. Content campaign: October through November.
We also track two secondary windows that surprise clients: the school holiday in mid-July through August (family travel, short-haul and medium-haul) and the “shoulder” period around Chinese Valentine’s Day in August (Qixi Festival), which drives couple travel to romantic destinations.
From the field: a Moroccan destination that finally cracked Golden Week
We worked with a Moroccan destination management company that had been trying to attract Chinese travelers for two years with no results. When we reviewed their content history, the problem was obvious: they posted Marrakech content in October. For Golden Week. Content about a destination that their audience had never considered for CNY. And they were posting it on October 2nd, when their target traveler was already sitting on a plane.
We rebuilt their calendar from scratch. Golden Week content campaign started in July on Xiaohongshu: desert sunsets, riad aesthetics, food content, camel routes. We leaned into the “exotic but safe” angle that performs well for first-time long-haul Chinese travelers.
By August, 3 Chinese travel agents had reached out. By September, 2 group bookings confirmed for October. First Golden Week with actual Chinese guests. Not a record number, but a start. Year 2 was 4x the volume because the agents came back and the Xiaohongshu content was still circulating.
The numbers
| Holiday | Dates (approximate) | Content campaign start | Key audience | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Chinese New Year | Jan/Feb (lunar) | October-November | Families, couples | Luxury, cultural, iconic |
| Qingming | Early April | February | Short-haul travelers | Japan, SE Asia |
| Labour Day Golden Week | May 1-5 | March | Young couples, solo | Europe, Japan |
| Dragon Boat | June | April | Domestic mostly | Low outbound impact |
| National Day Golden Week | Oct 1-7 | July | All segments | Long-haul: Europe, Africa |
| Christmas/New Year | Late December | October | Luxury, couples | Ski, Christmas markets |

What we got wrong early on
We used to hand clients a holiday calendar and call it done. “Here are the dates, plan around them.” That’s not useful. The calendar without lead times is useless. The lead time without platform-specific content strategy is also useless.
We had a Paris luxury boutique hotel that received the calendar, started posting CNY content on January 15th, and wondered why it didn’t convert. CNY was January 28th that year. You can’t post awareness content two weeks before a holiday and expect bookings. The decision to travel for CNY is made in November.
That mistake changed how we deliver campaign calendars. Now every calendar we produce shows not just the holiday date but the content start date, the booking window peak, and the post-holiday follow-up timing for next year’s audience building.
What we do now
- Build the annual content calendar in Q4 of the prior year. All six key dates mapped with lead times and platform assignments.
- Start CNY campaigns in October. 10 to 12 weeks of awareness content before the holiday. Not promotional. Aspirational.
- Start Golden Week campaigns in July. 10 to 12 weeks before October 1st. Use July-August for awareness, September for conversion-focused content.
- Build post-holiday content for audience retention. After Golden Week ends, post “what our guests said” content. This is the cheapest audience-building you can do.
- Track the lunar calendar each year. CNY shifts by up to 4 weeks year to year. We set a calendar reminder every September to update all campaign timelines.
- Assign a channel to each holiday. Xiaohongshu for awareness phases. WeChat for conversion. Douyin for reach amplification during peak interest periods.
Summary table
| Topic | Key point |
|---|---|
| Most important holiday for long-haul | National Day Golden Week (Oct 1-7) |
| Biggest mistake | Starting content too late (2 weeks before vs 10-12 weeks) |
| Content start for Golden Week | July |
| Content start for CNY | October-November of prior year |
| Best channel for awareness | Xiaohongshu |
| Best channel for conversion |
