Golden Week 2026 Preview: Where Chinese Tourists Are Going (and How to Prepare)

Golden Week 2026 runs from October 1 to 7. Seven days, coming just after the Mid-Autumn holiday of September 25 to 27, which means many travelers take three days of leave and get thirteen days off. China’s National Immigration Administration expects 2.15 million border crossings per day during National Day, with peaks on October 1 and 4. Golden Week is not just a holiday. It is the single most important travel planning cycle of the year. If your business targets Chinese tourists and you are not ready by October 1, you are too late for this window.

Golden Week 2026: Which Destinations Are Trending

Based on Ctrip and Fliggy booking data trends and platform search activity heading into Q4 2026:

  • Thailand: Consistently the top outbound destination. Bangkok, Phuket, and Chiang Mai all show strong booking volume. Visa-free, short-haul, and affordable. The default choice for budget and mid-market travelers
  • Europe (short-haul from China’s perspective): France, Italy, Switzerland, and Germany remain premium targets. Visa requirements are the barrier, but travelers who plan in advance still book. The luxury segment goes to Europe
  • South Korea: Strong recovery in progress. Visa-free group entry through June 2026, plus new 5-year and 10-year visa options, make it easier than ever. K-culture demand is high among younger travelers
  • Japan: Demand is present but depressed by diplomatic tensions. Flight capacity was cut in 2025-2026. Some travelers who would normally choose Japan are redirecting to South Korea or Southeast Asia
  • Malaysia: Growing fast. Strong visa-free status, good flight connectivity, and genuine cultural appeal. Benefits from Japan’s weakened position in 2026
  • Middle East (UAE, Saudi Arabia): Fastest-growing category. Dubai is a prestige destination with strong appeal among affluent travelers. Luxury experiences, shopping, and architecture content do well on RED
  • New and emerging: Peru, Georgia, and Central Europe (Hungary, Czech Republic) are growing on Chinese platforms but still niche for Golden Week planning

What Changed vs Golden Week 2025

  • Japan: The biggest change. Chinese arrivals to Japan dropped 60% in early 2026 due to diplomatic tensions. Japan, which was the top outbound destination in 2024, is no longer the default first choice
  • Visa changes: South Korea introduced visa-free group entry in September 2025. China extended visa-free access to over 100 countries, including several Latin American nations. Both changes shift booking patterns
  • New routes: Expanded flight connectivity from Chinese tier-2 and tier-3 cities (Xi’an, Chengdu, Changsha, Nanjing) to Southeast Asia and Europe means Golden Week travel is no longer concentrated in Beijing and Shanghai
  • Pricing: Airfare has normalized since the post-COVID surge. International flights are more affordable than 2023-2024, which increases overall outbound volume. Hotels at popular destinations like Bangkok and Phuket are raising prices to match demand
  • Traveler profile: The 2026 Golden Week traveler is more likely to be independent (FIT) than on a group tour. Self-planned itineraries using Chinese OTAs are now the default for travelers under 40

How Tourism Businesses Should Prepare Right Now

  • Confirm your Ctrip and Fliggy listings are active and updated. Golden Week bookings start 4-6 weeks in advance for Chinese travelers
  • Add WeChat Pay and Alipay if you have not already. Payment friction loses bookings
  • Prepare Chinese-language welcome materials: check-in instructions, menus, attraction guides
  • Brief your front-line staff on basic Chinese customer service norms: greeting etiquette, hot water availability, quiet preferences for some older travelers
  • Update your Dianping (Chinese TripAdvisor) listing and respond to existing Chinese-language reviews
  • Run a RED or Douyin content push in September, before Golden Week, to capture travelers still in planning mode
  • If you work with Chinese tour groups, confirm all bookings and logistics with partner agencies now
  • For luxury properties: activate WeChat CRM campaigns to past Chinese guests. Repeat visitors are the highest-conversion segment

Platforms to Activate Before October 1

  • Xiaohongshu (RED): Post destination content in September. Chinese travelers use RED for inspiration and practical planning. A strong presence now drives Golden Week bookings. See our RED marketing guide
  • Douyin: Short video content showing your destination or property. Golden Week travel content performs especially well on Douyin because of the holiday energy. See our Douyin strategy service
  • Ctrip and Fliggy: Both run Golden Week promotional campaigns. Being listed in their curated Golden Week destinations packages gives significant visibility
  • WeChat: For businesses with an existing Chinese customer base, Golden Week-specific offers via WeChat Official Account or mini-program drive direct bookings
