Golden Week 2026: First Day Travel Snapshot
Golden Week starts now. Today is October 1, 2026. The airports are full. Ctrip and Fliggy processed a record number of ticket activations in the 72 hours before today. Here is what the first-day data is showing.
Departure Numbers: Day One
- China’s border police forecast 2.15 million crossings per day over the 7-day holiday, about 15 million in total, counting both directions. Day one traditionally accounts for the largest single-day volume
- Beijing Capital, Shanghai Pudong, and Guangzhou Baiyun reported full capacity in morning departure slots
- Chengdu Tianfu, Xi’an Xianyang, and Chongqing Jiangbei are showing significant volume, reflecting the growing share of tier-2 city travelers going international
- Thailand-bound flights are at maximum capacity on all major carriers including Air China, China Southern, and Thai Airways
- South Korea routes are at near-full capacity, particularly Seoul Incheon. Group trips stay cheap with the group visa fee waived until December 31, 2026

Top Destinations: Where They Are Going
- Thailand: Bangkok and Phuket lead. Chiang Mai is growing among younger independent travelers. The default Golden Week choice for millions
- South Korea: Strong recovery visible in real-time. Seoul bookings are up 48% versus October 2025. Myeongdong and Dongdaemun are trending on RED this morning
- Europe: Paris, Rome, and Zurich are the premium destinations. Travelers in this category booked 4-6 weeks ago. Hotels are reporting high Chinese occupancy
- Malaysia: Kuala Lumpur and Penang recording strong arrivals. The Genting Highlands resort complex sold out weeks in advance
- Middle East: Dubai is the prestige choice this Golden Week. Luxury properties in Dubai are at capacity with Chinese guests
- Japan: Notably quiet compared to previous years. Diplomatic tensions have suppressed demand. Some Japan-bound travelers rerouted to South Korea or Thailand
Platform Activity Right Now
Xiaohongshu and Douyin are running hot. The content formats that dominate Golden Week day one:
- Airport departure posts: “We are at PVG heading to [destination].” These tag locations and generate huge reach from followers who are planning future trips
- Arrival impressions: First posts from travelers landing in Bangkok, Seoul, and Paris are live now. The first 24 hours generate more content than the rest of the week combined
- Hotel check-in reveals: Room reveal videos are a Golden Week staple. Properties with distinctive design, views, or unique features get the most organic share
- Food discovery: Day one dinner posts. Thai street food, Seoul fried chicken, French pastries. Food content drives the highest engagement per post on both platforms during Golden Week
What Travelers Are Posting on RED Today
The trending content on Xiaohongshu this morning reflects exactly where Chinese travelers have gone:
- Bangkok street food market first impressions (“Arrived last night. The food here is better than ever”)
- Seoul Myeongdong shopping reports (“The crowds are back but it is still worth it”)
- Paris at sunrise (“Woke up early to avoid the tourists. Yes, I know I am also a tourist”)
- Phuket beach hotel check-ins (“We booked this three months ago. Fully packed”)
- Dubai skyline at night from a hotel window (“This is the most photogenic city right now”)
The Story of This Golden Week
Three things define Golden Week 2026 compared to previous years.
First, Japan is out of the picture for most travelers. The China-Japan diplomatic situation has created a real gap that other destinations, especially South Korea and Malaysia, are filling.
Second, the traveler profile has shifted. The group tour is no longer dominant. Independent Chinese travelers, booking their own flights and hotels on Ctrip, Fliggy, and direct channels, are the majority in 2026. They are more spontaneous and more demanding.
Third, the content economy matters more than ever. Destinations that are visible on RED and Douyin before October 1 are seeing the benefit today. Destinations that are not visible are invisible.
